Public space of Social Services Centre and sports ground
project: Public space of Social Services Centre and sports ground type: public space location: Miastko, PL size: 13 280 m² team: Marcin Maraszek, Maciej Kaufman status: competition, 2017
The competition task considered two different terrains, which both border on urban areas:
Social Services Centre (CUS)
Neighborhood’s sports field.
The project proposes, for both sites, two distinct and self-defining spatial forms. They differ from dull surroundings, aim to attract and integrate – both in social and spatial terms.
Integration. Both sites, as they are public spaces, should serve different groups of users:
CUS – mostly the attendees of all the Center’s units, e.g. people, who are often socially excluded;
Sport field with its activity and relaxation infrastructure – all the inhabitants from the district no matter their financial, social status or their age.
Social Services Centre (CUS). CUS is an open and available space, quite informal and friendly, encouraging different groups of people to interact. Postindustrial character of this space is respected and escalated as part of its identity. Customers and attendees of the Center’s different units can meet in one central space allocated to sport and relaxation purposes. CUS public space comprises 3 basic elements:
„recreation lane” – the recreation and sport areas of the lane are the extension of the functions of the adjacent buildings.
stroll path is adjacent to the CUS building on the right bank of Studnica river. It’s a landscape promenade following the river and meandering between the growing trees;
flower and vegetable garden is located between the buildings of Senior Citizen Activity Center and a Preschool, nearby the existing community gardens.
Neighbourhood’s sports field. The land use of the vicinity of the soccer field was designed in a close relation to terrain relief. The objective is to create an interesting, multifunctional recreational space which would facilitate citizens’ integration: the sport facilities are not solely for the purpose of physical activity, but also a type of open stage that should attract interest from the neighbors.
