Mariensztat as a campus

New faculty building at Bednarska Street creates an academic micro campus. At the functional level, the building is an integrated unit, but on an urban scale it consists of a set of smaller houses and public spaces open to the public. This kind of “urban planning of the third way (between traditional and modernist) is typical (or inherent) for Mariensztat. The new city block reconstructs the pre-war Mariensztat street, connecting the river boulevards and the Old Town. The wide outdoor stairs connecting the levels of Dobra Street and Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie Street are a characteristic element of the project and a typical form of public space in the Mariensztat neighborhood. Its slight inclination and ramps enhances sitting and interaction, while ensuring accessibility for disabled people in wheelchairs and parents with children. This integrating feature of stairs has also been used in the interiors of the building, common halls and lobbies lead users to the intimate roof gardens. The casual nature of the roof gardens contrasts with the public character of the ground floors and the building’s surroundings.

For Mariensztat and for the climate

The urban scale of the buildings and their form refer to the architecture of Mariensztat. Building facades are reminiscent of traditional facades (“walls with windows”), which are also optimal in terms of energy efficiency. The interior of the central building is occupied by a three-story hall equipped with a system of steps and stands rising through all levels. The degrees are used not only for communication between levels, but also for rest, interaction and integration, they are an informal workplace. Their highest level connects to the roof garden.
